Business Event Celebrates Aberdeen’s Position on World Stage


More than 150 people gathered in Aberdeen for an event which celebrated Aberdeen’s position as a leading global energy centre this week.

The inaugural World Gateway in Dyce on Thursday, September 5th celebrated the work of the World Energy Cities Partnership and provided an opportunity for local businesses to build on this network whilst expanding their corporate horizons. Carefully timed to coincide with SPE Offshore Europe, the event was the first ever World Gateway and the 21st in the Gateway series, created by Aberdeen company Granite PR.

A prestigious line-up of speakers included Aberdeen Lord Provost Barney Crockett; keynote presenter Romain Chambault of Baker Hughes a GE Company (BHGE); chairperson Leif Johan Sevland, President & CEO of ONS and a founding member of the WECP ;The British High Commissioner to Guyana Greg Quinn; Ed Gardyne of Safewell Solutions, Allan McCartney of OmniFlow, Mark Fraser of Nucore Group, Nick Little of the International School Aberdeen, The Government of Western Australia’s European representative, Commodore Mike Deeks and Mike Savage, President of the WECP and Mayor of Halifax.

The Lord Provost of Aberdeen Barney Crockett, Vice-President of World Energy Cities Partnership said: “The Gateway events are well-known for providing excellent business and networking opportunities which is why it was fitting that the 21st Gateway celebrated the World Energy Cities Partnership.

“A key driver of the WECP is to provide opportunities to share knowledge on current and future developments while facilitating business-to-business interaction and networking opportunities and by hosting the WECP AGM here in Aberdeen local participants have access to these opportunities on their doorstep.

“The World Gateway Breakfast is one such occasion and I was delighted to address delegates, to showcase the city and to help promote the opportunities this successful event lends itself to.”

Romain Chambault, Europe Director, Oilfield Equipment, for Baker Hughes, a GE company (BHGE) said: “Knowledge sharing has to be at the core of any initiative focused on overcoming the most daunting challenges our industry is facing today. For us it has been a great pleasure to be part of the World Gateway session, sharing our own learnings and experience, and leading the discussion alongside key stakeholders in the industry.”

World Gateway chairman Leif Johan Sevland added: “Gathering representatives from the energy cities to discuss common opportunities and challenges is a great initiative.”

Commenting on the success of the inaugural World Gateway, Granite PR Founder and Managing Director Brett Jackson said: “This exciting event takes our Gateway concept to a new level by encouraging delegates to think in a truly international way. Some presentations will be location-specific and some more globally focused giving a good balance and mix for those keen to look beyond our shores.”
